Account Manager, Public Affairs


Nyhus is looking for an Account Manager to support our growing number of high-profile clients. A key area of focus will be communications work in commercial real estate, including navigating land-use and development issues, community engagement and public affairs. The ideal candidate will be able to successfully lead multi-pronged campaigns while maintaining a supportive work environment and culture of accountability. The position requires someone who can own and manage client relationships, think and implement quickly and creatively in a fast-paced environment, and serve as a value-added extension of our clients’ staff while being an integral member of the Nyhus team. The ideal candidate will have connections with relevant local government agencies, and experience making the most of them on behalf of clients.



Public Affairs and Government Relations

 – Understand, anticipate and act on client needs
– Serve as strategic lead and day-to-day contact for clients, managing multi-faceted public affairs and communications programs
– Develop and present communications plans that capture business goals, situation analyses, challenges, solutions, measurement criteria and budgetary planning
– Collaborate effectively with internal team to provide clients with top-quality service and support
– Stay current on existing and proposed legislation – and its implications – at the city, county and state levels
– Establish, grow and leverage relationships with elected officials and lobbyists

Community and Influencer Engagement

 – Establish relationships with key community stakeholders and local influencers
– Manage client relationships with leaders, influencers and champions to advance advocacy agenda
– Create language on behalf of clients to engage and motivate community leaders and influencers
– Create and oversee event management and logistics for community-outreach projects

Media Relations

 – Create and execute media plans to advance client goals
– Establish and nurture relationships with journalists
– Propose story ideas (including scope and timing), schedule meetings, educate and shape opinions on key campaign themes
– Moderate media interviews, provide clients useful briefing materials ahead of time, and offer constructive coaching afterward


 – Lead development of excellent client-facing written materials, including press releases, editorials, fact sheets, position papers, marketing collateral, and briefing documents
– Serve as strategic reviewer for other team members’ work

People and Account Management

 – Manage client expectations and budgets effectively
– Work with client and team to effectively and efficiently contract, invoice, allocate resources and manage time
– Track time precisely and consistently
– Manage interns, account coordinators, account executives and senior account executives, where needed and appropriate
– Participate in cross-team special projects as needed

Business Development

 – Contribute to the creation of compelling public affairs strategies for prospective clients
– Provide thoughtful and strategic counsel to existing clients to improve their results and organically grow our engagements with them
– Demonstrate strong skills with social media tools and their applications
– Raise the visibility of the firm by participating in external community and industry networking activities


 – 80% billable
– Based on a minimum 40-hour work week; although position will likely require additional hours, including some evenings and weekends


 – BA/BS degree in political science, communications, public relations or related field preferred
– At least 6 years of agency, campaign or relevant government/political experience
– At least 2 years managing client relationships
– At least 2 years managing individuals or a team
– Established political experience that will benefit clients
– Experience facilitating meetings with elected, business and civic leaders
– Ability to produce quality work under tight deadlines
– Experience writing and developing media materials
– Ability to juggle multiple simultaneous tasks
– Excellent written and verbal communications
– Team player with a positive attitude and initiative
